the shared dining area is a bright and inviting space
BACKGROUND
This project began with the brief to create a single living room dining room are for this family that enjoys cooking and hanging out together in the evenings. They also wanted us to improve their energy efficiency by insulating the floor and adding underfloor heating, improving the insulation to the roof and walls, and increasing natural light in the existing extension.
Work began onsite in March of 2018 when the structural work began, but also during the process a unique opportunity to buy the house next door came up for consideration and we were asked to complete a total house renovation on this property as well. The result is 2 semi detached houses fit for 21st century living and available for additional income / family space for our lovely clients.

STRUCTURAL WORKS
Removing the wall separating the dining & living room created the open space, but of course we discovered that the original buildings had left mountains of rubble under the floor which not only disturbed the ventilation needed to keep the floor dry abut also made the job of insulating & adding underfloor heating impossible. So first clearing this and adding new drainage for a new ground floor WC had to be carefully done. Also adding a new skylight to the existing extension, insulating the loft and removing a chimney were first on the list. Once these had been completed we started to put back the floor, the new utility, a whole new heating system (with new lead free water main), all new electrics and the underfloor heating system. Along with rearranging doors & windows.
All in all the house was given a whole new lease of life and created a beautiful and practical kitchen and utility space that can be enjoyed by all the family.
NEW KITCHEN
Working with one of our trusted suppliers the family chose a kitchen and design, as well as a fabulous marble effect Corian style worksurface which really set off the whole kitchen. As one of our clients is a very keen cook (and baker as the multitude of cakes we had can testify… nom nom) this was enormously important and really creates the hub of family life.
The final result speaks for itself
PHASE II
In phase II our clients had been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to buy the house next door and it needed a full renovation. So, we moved into the house next door and stripped the house down and renovated the whole building to create an extra bathroom with a similar layout to the house next door – remove an old defunct chimney, a whole new heating system and electrics, new floors a new kitchen and of course full decorations – and all of this in time so that the family could enjoy Christmas with lots of relatives visiting.
